10 reasons why you should travel to Java

Java is one of the biggest islands in Indonesia and there is a lot to do there. Here are our top 10 reasons why you should travel to Java.

The history

The first reason why you should travel to Java is the historic sites you will visit during your stay. The history of the island begins with the settlement of Indonesian Kingdoms on the island. With time, merchants from China, India and the Persian Gulf travelled by Java. Later, Indonesia was colonized by Dutch and Portuguese. These different cultural influences shaped current Javanese culture and left marvellous historical sites.

The temples

There are hundreds of temples in Java, especially in the central region, near Yogyakarta and Merapi volcano. The most famous are Borobudur, a Buddhist temple, and Prambanan, a Hindu temple. These two temples are reason enough to travel to Java. As a proof of Java multiculturalism, Prambanan and Borobudur are located only 50 kilometres away from each other.

Javanese people

More than history or landscapes, the locals are the best reason why you should travel to Java. For an authentic holiday in Indonesia, take time to chat with the people you will meet on your way. Javanese are curious and even though they don’t always speak great English they will be pleased to meet you, share their culture and ask questions about yours.

Volcanoes

You can’t say you’ve seen Java until you’ve hiked to the top of one of the many volcanoes on the island. Bromo, Ijen, Merapi, Merbabu, Semeru are as many reasons why you should travel to Java. Every hike is different but they all have in common a spectacular, breath-taking view once you’ve reached the end.

Javanese cuisine

It might surprise you but gastronomy is a very important part of Javanese culture, another reason why you should travel to Java. Food in Java usually is sweeter and less spicy as it is in the rest of the country.

You can find batik in many countries but this art war created in Java, and in October 2019 Indonesian batik was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a reason why should travel to Java.

Easy access

From a more practical point of view, Java is very easy to travel to. Public transport is developed and allows you to explore the island easily. Yogyakarta International Airport is well connected to the city centre from where you can take a train to East Java to climb Bromo or Ijen volcano. From there you can travel to Bali.
